Wine Notes: October
Jeffery Lindenmuth - October 2013
Castle Rock Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2010
A good by-the-glass Cab, this Washington wine is likable for its fresh ripe fruit, including aromas of raspberry, cherry, and blackberry that reemerge on the palate, joined by mocha and toasty oak notes, with a hint of herbal mint, leading to a smooth dry finish with soft and well-integrated tannins.
Symington Family Douro Altano 2010
Medium-bodied, jammy, and versatile, this robust red is crafted from the traditional Port grapes Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca. Following aromas of violets and lavender, dark berry fruit and plum take charge, joined on the palate by peppery spice and some flashy dark chocolate and coconut, showing modest tannin.
Waterbrook Merlot Columbia Valley 2010
An easy-drinking Merlot that is juicy, fresh, and supple, with lifted aromas of black raspberry, red cherry, and baking spices. On the palate, the vivid mélange of berry fruit comes coupled with vanilla, leather, and cocoa, while a hint of licorice appears on the medium finish with its soft fine tannins.
Inama Soave Classico Vigneto du Lot 2011
Lean, lithe, and refined, alluring aromas of orange blossom, herb, and stone fruits introduce this Soave, with flavors of firm peach and almonds driven by bright acidity. The crisp, bracing finish and seashell-like minerality make for a great apéritif or partner with shellfish.
Cakebread Cellars Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2010
Red berry fruit meets cedar, vanilla, sandalwood, and anise in this aromatic and richly layered Pinot, revealing delicate hints of rose petal beneath the bright fruit. The wine is broad and mouthwatering on the palate, with pomegranate and raspberry fruit leading to an earthy finish laced with nutmeg and tea.
Patz & Hall Chardonnay Mendocino County Alder Springs Vineyard 2010
Redolent of Bartlett pear and baked apple, this sublime white boasts a finely detailed aroma of white flowers, toasted nuts, and lemon curd. The flavor shows impressive length and dimension, awash with fresh orchard fruits, hazelnuts, and spice, delivered with subtlety and grace, while ample acidity balances the sweet fruit flavors.
Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2008
This single-vineyard wine reveals the greatness of its site, exhibiting the combination of elegance, structure, complexity, and class that makes it a benchmark of Brunello. Currant and raspberry fruit are embraced by distinctive balsamic notes, while black pepper, vanilla, and mint resonate on the long finish.
Klein Constantia Vin de Constance Constantia 2007
Crafted from Muscat de Frontignan from the iconic South African estate, this unctuous dessert wine is dripping with golden fruit, peaches, nectarine, mango, and papaya. The palate turns citrusy and tropical, with spice and green tea notes adding intrigue, while the mouthwatering acidity ably balances the flow of lush and creamy fruit.
Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley RBS Beckstoffer
To Kalon Vineyard 2010 While there is latent elegance suggested by the floral and spice aromas, it’s currently cloaked in pure power—a cascade of dense, ripe black plum and dark berry fruit woven with licorice and cacao. The long finish, with its mineral edge and depth of dark fruit, is tamed by taut and chewy tannins.
